Lyn Lifshin: Poem

PAST MANCHINEEL TREES

In gold fruit plentiful,
gorgeous as a dead
lover's eyes. It
poisoned several of
Columbus's crew.
Mangrove forests
with shallow needles,
wading birds,
land crabs. Ruins of
sugar plantations,
the wind mills,
skeletons
still standing
