Bony Yoga by Ryn Gargulinski. Weiser Books (118pgs.) $14.95
Bony Yoga is an essay on . . . well, you guessed it -- Yoga! This is not typically the kind of book that gets reviewed in 13thWR. It is not a literary work. It is not really a typical yoga manual either. It is more of an introduction to the discipline of yoga than a "how to" book. Ms. Gargulinski has an obvious love of yoga and this is a rather personal introduction. As with her other writings, this is a book steeped in humor and cuteness. Her pithy writing is aided by her own illustrations of a funny little skeleton demonstrating the various yoga positions. A couple of my students noticed this book on my desk during study hall and were immediately taken with the skeleton drawing and attempted to do some of the positions.Any book that can hold a teenager's attention for more than five minutes has something going for it.
This book is more inspirational that it is informational. I didn't come away from this book feeling that I'd learned a whole lot more about yoga than I knew before reading it, but I did find the book to be entertaining. Much like my students, I liked the skeleton. It was an effective visual aid and was consistent with Ms. Gargulinski's writing style. Readers will find this book enjoyable whether or not they are serious about practicing yoga.
